E INK CORPORATION ON FORTUNE'S 1998 "COOL COMPANIES" LIST
Startup is Pioneering Flexible Electronic Displays as Clear as Ink on Paper
Cambridge, MA. - June 17, 1998 – E Ink Corporation, developer of electronic displays based on "electronic ink" that can be printed onto paper and other flexible or curved surfaces, today announced that it has been named to the FORTUNE Cool Companies List for 1998. E Ink is one of only 12 companies nationwide named to the list.
The Cambridge-based startup was highlighted for several reasons, including its core technology, novel products and applications as well as its diverse technical and business team. The company was also selected for its unique work environment that has contributed to the company's rapid research and development success and applications advancements.
"During the past few months our progress has been incredible," said Jim Iuliano, President and CEO of E Ink. "We are continuing to add a world class team that has already made significant technical advances in our electronic ink and in building electronic ink displays that will change the way information is communicated. Because of the enormous breadth of applications and the immediate product opportunities, we are developing the partnerships we need to move our electronic ink displays into the market. And just three weeks ago, we announced funding of $15.8 million from investors and partners including Motorola, Hearst New Media and Interpublic. Topping all that off with this recognition from FORTUNE is tremendous."
Any tech company is eligible for consideration for the FORTUNE Cool Companies List. In determining the list, FORTUNE editors and reporters relied on their high-tech sources to select which tech companies' management, products, ideas and technology are the most exciting and "cool." Through this process, the FORTUNE editors sought out companies that "desire to change the world." E Ink joins other noteworthy cool companies from previous years' lists including PeopleSoft, Excite, Netscape and Cisco. The FORTUNE Cool Companies issue will appear on newsstands on June 22.
