ADVANCES IN ELECTRONIC INK TECHNOLOGY TO BE PRESENTED IN JOINT PAPERS WRITTEN BY E INK, TOPPAN AND PHILIPS AT ASIA DISPLAY / IDW 2001
Invited Paper on Active-Matrix Electrophoretic Displays, with Joint Papers on Color Electronic Ink Displays and Display Performance for Mobile Applications
Cambridge, MA. - October 10, 2001 – E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic ink technology for paper-like displays, announced today that it will present three technical papers at this year's Asia Display/International Display Workshop 2001 (AD/IDW '01) held in Nagoya, Japan on October 16-19, 2001 at the Nagoya Congress Center.
A paper co-authored by E Ink and strategic partner TOPPAN Printing will be presented by E Ink Senior Scientist Gregg Duthaler entitled "Paper-like Color Display Using Electrophoretic Ink and Color Filters." This paper describes a prototype developed using E Ink's electronic ink technology and a color filter array developed by TOPPAN to create the world's first color electronic ink display. Reflective color electronic ink technology shows great promise as a display solution for next generation smart handheld devices. This paper reports on significant performance enhancements made since E Ink and TOPPAN's initial announcement in May 2001 to jointly develop color electronic ink displays. This presentation will occur in a session focused on "Mobile Trends" in display technologies on Tuesday, October 16 at 4:00 p.m.
E Ink's Director of Platform Development, John Ritter, will present an invited paper entitled "Active-Matrix Electrophoretic Displays" during a session on "Paper-Like Displays." This paper will provide a review of the development status and performance attributes of high-resolution, active-matrix driven electronic ink displays, including a technology roadmap toward full color, flexible displays. This session will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17. In addition, Mr. Ritter will be chairing a session entitled "TFT Addressed Organic Electroluminescent Displays (OLEDs)" to be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 9:00 a.m.
E Ink Senior Scientist Guy Danner will present a paper co-authored by E Ink, Philips and VCD Sciences entitled "Display Performance for Mobile Device Applications" in a session focused on "Usability Design and Ergonomics" in displays. This paper will underscore the importance of wide viewing and illumination angles for display technologies in mobile applications where dynamic environments create new demands on display technology. The data will further demonstrate how electronic ink's paper-like viewability creates a highly effective solution when these displays are used in rapidly changing mobile lighting conditions. The paper will provide quantitative comparisons of display technologies from all three authors' research in the area of how luminance and legibility affect human perception under these conditions. The data is applied to a model developed by leading display industry consultant Louis Silverstein and his colleagues of VCD Sciences. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 17 at 2:50 p.m.
