E INK INVITED TO PRESENT ON FUTURE OF ELECTRONIC PAPER AT DISPLAY INDUSTRY CONFERENCE IN JAPAN

Barrett Comiskey to Present At NikkeiBP Organized LCD/PDP International Conference

Cambridge, MA. - October 22, 2001 – E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic ink technology for paper-like displays, announced today that Barrett Comiskey, co-founder and chief architect, will deliver an invited presentation at LCD/PDP International 2001 in Yokohama, Japan. The conference will be held on October 31-November 2, 2001 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center.

The session, "When Will Electronic Paper-A Technology That Will Bring Dramatic Changes to Society-Be Commercialized?" will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2001 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The session will be moderated by Makoto Omodani, faculty of engineering associate professor of Tokai University. It will also include experts from Fuji Xerox, NEC and Tokai University. The group will discuss various aspects of technology advancements that promote the commercialization of electronic paper. Comiskey's presentation will focus on advances in displays made with electronic ink technology.

"E Ink has always strived to remain ahead of display technology," said Russ Wilcox, vice president and general manager of E Ink, Corp. "Our ultimate vision is RadioPaper™, a display with the readability of ink on paper but with the added benefits of digital technology. Recently, we have reached key milestones with our strategic partners TOPPAN and Philips, including color, high-resolution and flexibility, that have significantly advanced us on the path to commercialization."

About E Ink's Electronic Ink Technology

E Ink's electronic ink offers a paper-like look that provides three main benefits over traditional and emerging display technologies:

Readability – Because it contains the same coloring agents as normal ink and paper, electronic ink is more than six times brighter than reflective LCDs, exceeds newspapers in contrast ratio and reads easily in both dim light and full sunlight. Like paper, electronic ink displays have a clear image that can be seen at any angle without a change in contrast.

Ultra-Low Power – Electronic ink allows a fixed image to remain on the screen even after the power source is shut off, leading to dramatically longer battery life. The bright paper-white background of electronic ink also eliminates the need for a backlight in most lighting conditions. When commercialized, electronic ink displays will draw less than 1/10th the power required by other 'low power' display technologies commonly used in smart handheld devices, such as reflective LCDs. As a result, portable devices incorporating electronic ink displays could function with far smaller batteries, making them less expensive and more portable.

Thin, Light Flexible Form – Displays made with electronic ink technology are expected to be 30 to 50 percent thinner and lighter than traditional LCD displays. Given that electronic ink materials are based on plastic and not glass, this technology will be a significant enabling factor in the development of next generation flexible displays.
