Cambridge, MA. - May 15, 2002 – E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic ink technology, will discuss the company's recent progress in its efforts to commercialize this next generation publishing medium at the Society for Information Display's Annual Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition, to be held May 19-24 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass. Prototypes of electronic ink displays will be available for viewing in E Ink's booth, number 2405, and their partner Philips Electronics' booth, number 2629, from Tuesday, May 21, through Thursday, May 23. Three technical papers on the latest advances of electronic ink-based displays co-written with E Ink's strategic partners Philips Electronics and TOPPAN Printing will be presented during the technical symposium.
E Ink's booth will feature development prototypes that represent the latest efforts to commercialize paper-like displays, including the world's first high-resolution, color electronic ink display developed jointly by E Ink and TOPPAN utilizing Philips' active matrix technology. Also featured will be the latest demonstrations from E Ink's Flexible Microelectronics facility which will show ultra-thin, "shatter-proof," high-resolution displays fabricated on flexible steel backplanes, as opposed to glass used in traditional displays.

Over the past year, E Ink has made several advances that launch the commercialization of electronic ink across multiple markets. In August 2001, the company released Ink-In-Motion™, a dynamic electronic display component for integration into retail point-of-purchase and other signage applications. Customers include many brands, like Coca-Cola, which used the displays for various promotions during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In February 2002, E Ink announced the launch of a new product platform for character and segmented display cells for use in a broad range of consumer and industrial electronic products.
Also in early 2002, E Ink and Vossloh System-Technik GmbH (VST) announced an agreement to jointly develop electronic ink-based signage for the European transportation industry. Additionally, E Ink expanded its strategic partnerships with Philips Electronics and TOPPAN Printing to solidify their commitments for commercialization of high-resolution, active matrix displays using E Ink's electronic ink technology in 2003. In February, E Ink received an additional $25 million in funding from TOPPAN as well as manufacturing and distribution support in Japan. In March, E Ink and Philips announced the completion of phase one of their joint development agreement and committed notable resources towards commercializing high-resolution electronic ink displays in mid-2003.
"E Ink's manufacturing and marketing partnerships with leaders in the display industry like TOPPAN and Philips makes us whole and enables us to aggressively go to market with high-resolution, active matrix paper-like displays in 2003. The activities around SID demonstrate the strength of partnership and cooperation that exists between our companies," said Dan Button, vice president of Business Development for E Ink. "Philips, TOPPAN and E Ink have made tremendous strides toward commercialization and we are excited to display our latest progress at SID in our hometown of Boston."
