E INK CO-FOUNDER TO SPEAK AT ACCLAIMED TED CONFERENCE
Barrett Comiskey Will Discuss How Electronic Ink Will Impact Technology, Entertainment and Design
Cambridge, MA. - January 30, 2001 – E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic ink technology, today announced that Barrett Comiskey, chief architect and co-founder, will speak at TED, a conference about how technology, entertainment and design are emerging, merging and evolving together. Comiskey will discuss how electronic ink will change the way information is visually communicated. The conference will be held February 21-24 at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, Calif. Comiskey is scheduled to present Thursday, February 22 at 11:30 a.m. PT.
Electronic ink is a unique technology that combines the superior look of ink on paper with the dynamic capability of an electronic display. This smart material changes the image it displays when exposed to an electric field. That means ordinary surfaces coated with electronic ink can be updated continually with new information. Yet unlike conventional electronic displays, electronic ink-based displays offer all the benefits that have made ink on paper the preferred visual communication medium for the past 3,000 years.
"Electronic ink will have broad usage in many applications, from poster-like signs in retail stores that change on command, to replacement displays for pagers, cellular phones and PDAs, to thin, portable electronic books and newspapers, to applications which we cannot yet conceive," said Barrett Comiskey, chief architect and co-founder of E Ink. "Ultimately electronic ink will change the way information is visually communicated by bringing information out from behind computer screens and into the everyday world around us."
TED (www.ted.com), held annually in Monterey, California since 1990, has been described as the world's greatest conference experience. Each year TED brings together a prestigious collection of leaders from the business, academic, and artistic worlds to share their experiences and exchange ideas. The eclectic range of past presenters covers the spectrum from architects to zoologists and includes Microsoft's Bill Gates; co-founder of Greenpeace, Robert Hunter; brain surgeon, Keith Black; co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Bill Joy; columnist and author, Arianna Huffington; Rabbi, Irwin Kula; and, stand-up comedian, Sinbad. The conference has also become a forum for innovation and has been an early showcase venue for a number of major products, including the original Macintosh computer, the revolutionary Java programming language, Adobe's Photoshop software, and the publishing phenomenon, Wired magazine.
