E INK, TOPPAN AND PHILIPS TO PARTICIPATE IN FLAT PANEL DISPLAY EXHIBITION & SEMINAR IN JAPAN

E Ink and TOPPAN to Jointly Exhibit Latest Technology Developments; E Ink and Philips to Present on the Commercialization of Paper-Like Displays for Mobile Appliances at LCD/PDP International 2002

Cambridge, MA. - October 22, 2002 – E Ink Corporation, the leading developer and marketer of electronic ink technology for paper-like displays, today announced its first display industry exhibition in Japan with manufacturing, development and marketing partner TOPPAN Printing Company. E Ink also announced that John Ritter, senior director of platform development at E Ink, and Peter Kurstjens, general manager, Electronic Ink Displays at Royal Philips Electronics, will make a joint presentation at this year's LCD/PDP International Exhibition & Seminar.

This year's Exhibition & Seminar, themed "Displaying the Future," will take place October 30 - November 1 at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall in Yokohama, Japan. E Ink will be exhibiting a range of prototypes using the company's proprietary ink technology, with partner TOPPAN Printing in booth #273.

The presentation, titled "Development of Electronic Ink Displays for Mobile Appliances," will discuss the progress of Philips' and E Ink's joint development effort to commercialize paper-like displays, and review their benefits for highly portable mobile devices. It will be presented in the FPDs for Mobile Applications (2) session on Friday, November 1 between 9:30am and 12:30pm.

"The benefits of electronic ink display technology have gained heightened visibility and interest over the past few years," said Ritter. "In our joint presentation with Philips, we will respond to this interest by discussing our commercialization plans as well as the attributes of electronic ink and how it is perfectly suited for next-generation mobile displays."

Philips made a strategic investment in E Ink in February 2001, and the two companies started working together to jointly advance E Ink's research and development. In March 2002, E Ink and Philips announced the completion of the first phase of their joint development agreement (JDA) and stated their intention to commit additional spending and complete joint development and commercialization of high-resolution electronic ink displays in 2003.

TOPPAN and E Ink significantly expanded their strategic partnership in February 2002. Under the terms of the partnership, TOPPAN will manufacture frontplane laminate (FPL) products for E Ink's high-resolution active matrix displays business using electronic ink supplied by E Ink. TOPPAN also will become E Ink's distributor of the FPL product to Japan-based TFT display makers. This expanded relationship added to an original $5 million investment a year earlier in E Ink with an additional $25 million.

In July of 2002 E Ink, Toppan and Philips announced the demonstration of the world's first high-resolution, active-matrix color display developed with electronic ink.

"LCD/PDP is a timely opportunity for E Ink and our partners to highlight the synergy of our relationship," said Daniel P. Button, vice president of E Ink's Matrix business serving high resolution, graphical applications. "We anticipate bringing our first high resolution, 'paper-like' product to market in 2003. Like our participation at this show, this product introduction combines the best assets of the three companies."
