E Ink Announces ePaper Signage Pilot with JR Central Agency

Installation deploys E Ink Spectra 6™ at select Tokyo railway stations

BILLERICA, Mass., August 18, 2026E Ink, a pioneer and leading global developer of ePaper technology, announced a pilot program with JR Central Agency, an advertising company within the JR Central Group, to deploy full-color ePaper signage powered by E Ink Spectra 6™ at its Tokyo Station. The trial is scheduled to run through March 2027 and will evaluate how color ePaper signage can support the digital transformation of transit advertising while improving operational efficiency for one of Japan's busiest railway networks.

The railway industry is at an inflection point as staffing shortages and the digitization of advertising media has caused operators and their advertising agencies to seek digital alternatives to conventional paper signage. By enabling remote content updates and consuming power only when content changes, ePaper signage reduces the labor and maintenance associated with installing and replacing paper advertisements. As a result, ePaper offers the benefits of digital without the operational constraints and environmental waste of traditional paper signage.

The trial will install select advertising signboards powered by E Ink Spectra 6™ within Tokyo Station. The following details the equipment at each location:

At the Yaesu South Exit:

  • AUO Display Plus 31.5-inch AecoPost
  • Sharp A2-size ePoster

At the Nihonbashi Exit:

  • AUO Display Plus 31.5-inch AecoPost

With nearly 100,000 visitors a day, this area provides an ideal, high-trafficked environment to assess the suitability of commercially available color ePaper signage for railway advertising applications. If the pilot meets its objectives, JR Central Agency plans to accelerate its consideration of introducing ePaper signage across stations.

"This trial further demonstrates how ePaper can support the next generation of sustainable transit advertising throughout Japan," said Naoki Sumita, President of E Ink Japan. "We will continue to work closely with various partners to make ePaper signage an attractive option for the transit industry."
